30%+ Reduced Emissions

PrandtlPlane® significantly cuts emissions by applying the concept of the Best Wing System (BWS).
This results from aerodynamics by Prandtl (1924) states that among all the possible lifting systems, one exists minimizing the induced drag. The benefit vs the best monoplane increase as increase the gap-to-span ratio (h/b).

Efficiency

Lower energy use, ready to go electric.
Lower drag means less power to fly, therefore higher endurance.

IDINTOS
The extreme flexibility of the PrandtlPlane® permitted to design a 2-seats amphibious airplane for leisure time. The airplane has been designed according to the EASA CS-VLA (Very Light Aircraft) specification, and a full scale prototype together with a 1:3 scaled radio controlled flying model have been built and tested.
The IDINTOS project, a Co-funded by the Regional Government of Tuscany, with a partnership of several research centers and SMEs allowed, over 30 months, to run stages of optimization, theoretical analysis, wind tunnel tests, and the final manufacturing of the aircraft, designed for efficiency during flight and water takeoff.
The aircraft features a floating fuselage, retractable landing gears, and a thermal engine driving two propellers.
A maximum measured aerodynamic efficiency of 18:1 makes this configuration very attractive also for an electrified version.
SkyBox Engineering is willing to transfer this technology from research to market, making it a real product.

AERODYNAMICS
The unique aerodynamic characteristic of PrandtlPlane’s box wing system consists in its natural smooth stall behavior, making the airplane less sensitive to maneuvering errors. The two counter rotating elevators on both wings allow controlling the airplane by a pure pitching moment, with an enhanced precision in maneuvering. On the front wing of this airplane there is a fowler flap, contributing to lowering the stall speed.

HYDRODYNAMICS
The planing hull has been designed both by CFD simulations and test carried out at CNR-INSEAN institute of Rome.
The position of the step (redan) and all its design parameters (axial position, thickness, shape) has been optimized by finding the trade-off between take-off performances, pilot’s view and pilot’s comfort.
